Am I Breathing Properly?

Sit in front of a mirror and take a deep breath in – the deeper the breath you take, the clearer your current breathing habits will appear. Pay close attention to what your body does.

Did your shoulders lift up a bit, or your upper chest?

If they did it’s a sign that you are using your secondary breathing muscles and probably adding extra tension to your neck, upper back, upper-chest, and trapezius muscles.  From this we can surmise that you are taking short, shallow breaths and not getting enough air into the lungs.  The key is to train the primary breathing muscle.  As we work towards correct breathing we must also start paying attention to certain thoughts and emotions that are sometimes deeply rooted in us and keep us in constant tension.

Our thoughts, our breathing and our bodies are intrinsically linked, and so if we can learn how to control our breathing in emotional situations, it can have a positive effect on our thought patterns and our body tension.
